The Salacgrīva Museum was founded in 1998 and operates as a local history center for residents, tourists, and history researchers. It covers the town of Salacgrīva and its surroundings, including the historical areas of Svētciems and Salacas. The museum collects information and preserves materials about fishing and fishermen on the Northern Vidzeme coast and in the lower reaches of the Salaca River, the ancient eel fishing with weirs, the history of Vecsalaca and Svētciems manors, which gave rise to Salacgrīva, the town's economic and political life, local schools, churches, and parishes, and the people of Salacgrīva who have honored the town and district with their contributions in education, science, culture, and art, as well as in business, politics, and the economy.

Exhibitions and Displays:
The museum currently features a new exhibition titled "LIVONIAN HERITAGE," which chronologically covers the period from prehistory to the Soviet occupation, detailing what has been preserved of Livonian heritage in the Salacgrīva area, which once belonged to the Metsepole Livonian district, or attempts to reveal the environment in which they lived and continue to live up to the 20th century. Although work is still ongoing, the exhibition space is set up and objects are on display. Being in the exhibition while it is in progress encourages visitors to engage with the process and feel involved.

The virtual exhibition "Treasures of Salacgrīva Museum" introduces the region through photographs and interactive elements, showing the area’s past and present. Visitors can build a eel weir from wooden blocks, assemble puzzles, weave colorful stripes into a rag rug, take photos in a retro photo studio using museum props, and test their knowledge in clever quizzes.
