Ceramic sculpture "The Mover"
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Salacgrīva, a fire sculpture was built and burnt, which has been a landmark for Salacgrīvians and tourists ever since. It was created by artist Imants Klīdzējs.
In nine days, a 2.5 metre high stone sculpture was created in Salacgrīva, on the left bank of the Salaca River, on the site of the old bridge.
The mover leans his hand against the ground because times are hard - winds, rain and snow - but he has to stand firm, be a guarantor of stability. In his other hand is an oar, a raft, or perhaps the flag of the city?
The ferryman is not just a fictional legend; the father of Robert Spurins (Bubja) once worked as a ferryman.
Why "The Mover"?
Salacgrīva as a town began to emerge in the 1870s, when the lands on the left bank of the Salaca River belonged to the Svētciems manor, while the right bank was owned by the Vecsalaca manor. Until 1923, traffic between the two sides was maintained only by means of a ferry. Only then did a wooden bridge start to be built and renovated every spring.
