AINAŽI SALACGRĪVA LIMBAŽI ALOJA un STAICELE

Our Lady of Refuge Orthodox church in Salacgrīva

The church was built according to the project designed by architect R. Pflug in 1849. His buildings reflected Byzantine architectural forms, which can also be seen in this church, where the so-called "Russian-Byzantine" style is combined.
The church was designed with a central dome, four corner domes, and a bell tower. The church in Vecsalaca was built from red bricks, with interior finishes and external decorative elements. The floor was originally made of stone, but in 1890 it was replaced with a wooden floor.

Construction was completed on February 20, 1873. The church's consecration was initially scheduled for April 13, 1873, but for some reason, it took place on April 15. The Vecsalaca Orthodox congregation received icons, bells, and altar utensils from the Riga Eparchy administration. The largest bell, weighing 49 poods (approximately 800 kg), was donated to the congregation by the Russian Emperor Alexander II in 1873. Additionally, five more bells were gifted to the congregation.

In 1873, the Vecsalaca congregation also built two wooden houses where the priest and his family, as well as the two psalmists, resided. In 1878, a stone fence was built around the church.

Between May 10 and 13, 1873, the Vecsalaca church was robbed—gilded silver liturgical vessels were stolen. The perpetrators were never found, and the police did not rule out the possibility that the thief was someone well-acquainted with the church, possibly even a member of the congregation. After World War II, the Vecsalaca congregation's church has not undergone any major renovations.
