It covers the town of Salacgrīva and its surroundings, which includes the historical territories of Svētciems and Salaca parishes. The museum collects information and preserves materials about fishing and fishermen on the coast of the North Vidzeme Sea and in the lower reaches of the Salaca River, about ancient lamprey fishing with weirs, about the history of the Vecsalaca and Svētciems estates, on whose lands Salacgrīva was founded, the economic and political life of the town, the schools, churches and parishes in the area, the people of Salacgrīva who honour the town and the region and are known for their services to education, science, culture and art, business, politics and the economy.
Exhibitions and displays:
The permanent exhibition Zutiņš murdā (Fish in a trap) tells the story of the history and traditions of fishing in the Vidzeme seaside, the centuries-old method of lamprey fishing, where a weir or trap is built across the river and the lampreys are caught not with a trap but with a pot. Zutiņš (eel) is the same lamprey, but a name with older origins and widely used in Salacgrīva. Nowadays it is spoken and fished only here. Here you can also learn about how fishermen in the village of Kuiviži, like the fisherman's son Oskar in the novel by Vilis Lācis, discovered salmon trap fishing. It is a story with the main focus on the 3 most valuable fish species in the Salaca river and the sea - lampreys, salmon and eels.
The virtual exhibition Treasures of the Salacgrīva Museum presents the region past and present through photographs and interactives.
