Nature reserve "Vidzeme Stony seashore"

+1
The protection of the Vidzeme rocky coastline began in 1957 with the creation of a protected geological site approximately 3 km long on both sides of Ķurmrags. In 1987, a complex nature reserve was established, covering an area of 1322 ha.
The nature reserve "Vidzeme Rocky Coast" in its current boundaries and covering an area of 3371 ha was approved in 2004. The reserve is located in the Liepupes and Salacgrīvas parishes of the Limbaži district. It encompasses the most beautiful and diverse coastal segment between Tūja and Vitrupe, including sandstone outcrops and the widest rocky beaches, coastal homestead landscapes and forests, as well as a marine shallow water zone up to 10 meters deep. The marine area of the reserve is characterized by underwater sand banks and shallows, rock accumulations, and deeper areas of coarse sand, gravel, pebbles, and rocky substrates. Algal beds are important spawning grounds for herring and feeding sites for waterfowl. Notable natural values of the reserve also include natural meadows formed by prolonged management and diverse, often moist, and minimally disturbed forests. The protected natural monuments are the Ežurgu Red Cliffs and the Veczemju Cliffs. The reserve area is also significant from a cultural-historical perspective, as it was formerly home to one of the shipyards on the Vidzeme coast.

During storms, coastal erosion creates new outcrops and picturesque landscapes, but unfortunately also washes away paths and threatens buildings.

To preserve the diversity of the reserve's natural landscape, it is important to maintain natural beaches, cliffs, dunes, and biologically valuable forests, as well as to mow or graze meadows. Dense, foreign development is not permitted along this coastline.

The Vidzeme rocky coastline is best explored on foot or by bicycle.
