AINAŽI SALACGRĪVA LIMBAŽI ALOJA un STAICELE

Limbaži medieval castle ruins and observation tower

The castle is one of the oldest fortification structures in Latvia.
The castle gate tower is the only one in Latvia where unique gates with fragments of a drawbridge grid have been preserved. Several important details from the Gothic period have survived in the main gate. In the southern wing, Gothic window openings with shallow pointed arches have been preserved. A spring flows from the northern slope of the castle mound.

Ships, cliffs, people, buildings, landscapes painted in pastel tones—motifs seemingly from fairy tales, reminiscent of Flemish painting… A veiled world emanates from the wall paintings in the attic floor of this house. These were once commissioned by a certain Braunšveigs, about whom little is known, yet thanks to the homeowner's refined taste, his name is often mentioned here. Today, these wall paintings are recognized as a nationally significant art monument. More info ››
