The Augstroze Hillfort Nature Trail

The trail is located in a scenic area, on a picturesque 13th-century hillfort, surrounded by many tales and legends.
The castle ruins visible at Augstroze Hillfort are the remains of the castle built in 1272 by the vassal of the Archbishop of Riga. The castle was constructed on a hilltop with the idea that the steep slopes of the hill would serve as protection. In 1601, the castle was looted and burned by the Poles and Tatars. The castle was never rebuilt. From the ruins, there is a stunning view of the landscape, including Augstroze Lake and the Madiešēni Marsh.
