Green Railways Ainaži - Valmiera
Enjoy a fascinating journey along the Green Railways, once lively railway routes, now transformed into tranquil trails through picturesque landscapes and dense forests.
Ainaži - Valmiera
This 85 km route starts at Ainaži North Pier, a former train and cargo transhipment point, and takes you through rural landscapes, forests, lively marshes and across rivers. Along the way, discover the information boards telling you about the rich railway history of the area and the nearby attractions.
Make sure you stop at the Ainaži Lighthouse to enjoy its historic charm. If you deviate a little from the route, you can also see the red cliffs of Salaca - a natural wonder. During your trip, we recommend a visit to the Niedrāju-Pilka swamp, which enchants with its natural beauty. We recommend a wood-fired pizza in Aloja, in the charming atmosphere of the former Aloja railway station. Don't forget to visit the Pale Local History Museum and Puikule Manor - two places with historical treasures that are definitely worth your attention.
The route also offers the opportunity to visit Zilaiskalns, home to an ancient cult site. There you will find a cultural and historical centre, interesting exhibitions and even the chance to try out the track bikes.
In Puikule, the route intersects with the green route from (Lāde) Limbaži to Rūjiena, offering even more opportunities for exploration.
Along the way, it is possible to see small motorised traffic from nearby farms and logging machinery, a reminder that this area is still active and alive.
These routes are perfect for cycling enthusiasts, hikers, horse riders and even skiers in winter. The paths are covered with natural gravel or forest tracks and marked with signs all along the route.
