Annasmuiža ferroconcrete bridge
The bridge over the Salaca three kilometres up Salacgriva – the first ferroconcrete bridge in the Baltic States.
Brige was built in 1908 and opened on 13 June, 1909. The view that greets from the bridge is typical to the Salaca – the most significant salmon river in Latvia and its valley – the nature reserve. Vecsalaca Bridge has 5 spans and it consists of two continuous span balks on the river banks according to scheme 17.90m + 17.90m and 18.15m long discontinuous balks in the middle of the bridge. In the cross – section of the bridge there were 4 balks. The midriff was made above the balks.
The height of the balk: above the support – 2.04m, in the span – 1.44m
The width of the carriageway – 4.5m
The width of the sidewalk – 1.25m
The density of the carriageway – 0.14m
The bridge had an important role in the road development in Salaca region, because in the centre of Salacgriva only a ferry functioned there in that time. In 1944 the German troops were retreating, so they blew the bank supports and the side spans of continuous balks up. In the post-war period the construction was renovated in wooden design and the bridge was exploited till 1962 when the support and the spans were re-established in its original appearance. Destroyed in the explosion concrete river supports were fixed by framing them in ferroconcrete encasement. In 1960 a new ferroconcrete bridge was built in the centre of Salacgriva and the old bridge was used only for local importance traffic. It was also used when the repair work of the new bridge took place in 1994. In the territory of Latvia, the ferroconcrete bridges were introduced sooner than in other provinces of Russian empire, because of the German ferroconcrete contractors „Wayass und Freytag A.G.” who worked here. The bridge in Vecsalaca is one of two bridges of initial period of ferroconcrete era in Latvia ground roads which have partially survived undamaged. The second bridge is over the Gauja near Strenči.
