Salaca Hillfort

It is impossible to determine how old Salacgrīva is. The hillfort on the right bank of the Salaca River is considered the oldest part of the town.
Salaca Hillfort was first mentioned in Henry’s Chronicle in the 13th century. An ancient Livonian legend tells that German merchants first dropped anchor here, at the mouth of the Salaca River, before continuing along the coast to the mouth of the Daugava River, where they founded Riga. In 1206, the ancient district of Metsepole became the property of the Bishopric of Riga. It is believed that as early as 1226, just 25 years after the founding of Riga, Bishop Albert ordered the construction of a stone castle here to protect the only sea port of the Bishopric of Riga. The castle was first mentioned in documents only in 1479. Whether the medieval castle was built on the site of the ancient Livonian hillfort is debated among researchers, and archaeological excavations are needed to resolve this issue. The hillfort is located behind the Lielsalaca Lutheran Church and can be accessed via wooden stairs.
