Limbaži medieval castle ruins and observation tower

The castle is one of the oldest defensive fortifications in Latvia.
The castle's gate tower, where fragments of the unique portcullis have survived, offers a view of the reddish roofs of the Old Town of Limbaži. Several important details from the Gothic period have been preserved in the main gate. In the southern building, the Gothic window aisles with flat arches of pointed arches have been preserved. A spring flows from the northern slope of the mound. Tel. 64070632

The surrounding landscape indicates that the castle is one of the oldest protective structures in Latvia.

Limbaži Medieval Castle Ruins and Panorama Tower

The construction of the castle was started in the first half of the 13th century. From the 15th to the 16th century it had been the residence of Riga’s archbishop. The castle was destroyed during the wars in the 17th and the 18th centuries. Renovation works of the castle ruins were started in 1999. The panorama tower was constructed instead of the castle “gate tower”. A spring flows down the castle mound on the North hillside. read more ››
